External Custom Fields (previously called External Merge Fields) let you pass recipient details, such as name, email or company, from your email platform into a OneMob link. When the recipient opens the link, OneMob records who they are instead of showing anonymous activity.
Use them when you send OneMob links through third-party tools like Gmail, Outreach, Salesloft or Mailchimp.
How it works
You add the fields to the end of your OneMob link as URL parameters. Your email platform replaces each placeholder with the recipient's real value when it sends the email, and OneMob shows those details in activity tracking. For example:
https://yourlink.onemob.com/?first_name={{FirstName}}&last_name={{LastName}}&email={{Email}}
Set up External Custom Fields
An admin must set up the fields once before anyone can use them.
- In the Control Panel, open Settings.
- Open the Custom fields tab.
- Click Manage on the External Custom Fields row.
- Add the fields you want to capture, such as first name, last name, email and company.
- Save your changes.
The fields are now available to every user in your organization. Common fields are First Name, Last Name, Email and Company. Field names must match what your email platform expects.
Add the fields to your links
Each email platform writes placeholders in its own format. Copy the placeholders from your platform rather than typing them, then add them to your OneMob link.
Outreach
https://yourlink.onemob.com/?first_name={{first_name}}&last_name={{last_name}}&email={{email}}
Use Outreach's built-in variables or plugin to get the format right.
Salesloft
https://yourlink.onemob.com/?first_name={{contact.first_name}}&last_name={{contact.last_name}}&email={{contact.email}}
Field names can vary with your configuration, so confirm them in your Salesloft personalization settings.
Mailchimp
https://yourlink.onemob.com/?first_name=*|FNAME|*&last_name=*|LNAME|*&email=*|EMAIL|*
The tags must match your Mailchimp audience field settings.
Best practices
- Insert placeholders from your email platform, or its plugin, to avoid formatting errors.
- Keep your OneMob field names consistent with your email platform's fields.
- Send yourself a test email and confirm the fields fill in before you send to recipients.
If it does not work
- Fields are not filling in: check that the placeholder format matches your email platform and that the fields exist in both tools.
- Activity still shows as anonymous: confirm the fields are in the link and that an admin has finished the setup above.
- The link is broken: check the URL for missing symbols or spaces.
